Normal
A person with a normal spine has no symptoms and is feeling well. Normal can be another term for being healthy.
Common
Common symptoms could include the following: dull pain, aches, stiffness, tension, intermittent sleeping patterns, and headaches. These are not normal.
The Trap
When discussing symptoms relating to the spine, sometimes we say one when we mean the other. We fall into the pattern of thinking everything is normal, when in reality, it just seems normal to us, which is not normal to the standard of a healthy spine.
The Reason
Since the symptoms aren’t very severe, it is easy get used to the pain. For example, when a person is experiencing back discomfort with a rating of a 2 or 3 out of 10, 1 being the least amount of pain and 10 being the most, after a while the body develops an adaptation response to the symptoms. The person then believes that this is a normal biological occurrence and there is nothing to be concerned about.
The Remedy
Stop, clear your mind, get in a comfortable position and think to yourself, do I feel any of these symptoms at all? If not, then things are probably normal.
If you do feel some of the symptoms, take a moment to list them out, turning your head, bending your body and taking notes. Anything that you do feel at this point would not be considered normal.
Now, ask yourself, have you become used to this, perhaps not noticing at first? If so, these are common symptoms, and they do often occur with the spine and the associated structures, in people with musculo-skeletal issues.
The Action
If you find yourself with common symptoms, bringing your list with you to your next visit will help identify areas of discomfort that may need attention, and if you have become used to them again, the list will help remind you where they were.
Have an uncommonly great day!
